Organization, Structure Help ADHD Kids

More than four million school children in the United States have ADHD. For many of them, medication is an important part of their treatment. It shouldnt, however, be their only treatment.

"Doctors who treat children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder said structure in the classroom and at home is vital." Columbus, Ohio news station 10TV reported. "Doctors recommend also including organization, prompts to keep kids on task and even checklists so they can follow their routines."

According to the 10TV report, Dr. Daniel Coury also suggests having students complete homework as soon as they get home so that theyre not having to stay focused later at night when medication may be wearing off.

Summer Camp Can Improve Structure and Maturity

Many parents of kids with ADHD are hesitant about medication, but don't know if there are any alternatives. One possibility is a summer camp program designed specifically for kids with ADHD.
"Because the summer months, when school lets out, break the structure, pace and expectations of daily living, children with ADHD do not perform well in summer months. Leaving an ADHD child at home, during the summer, can lead to maladaptive behavior and often results in a difficult transition back into the academic setting in the fall. Finding a summer camp that is specifically designed for ADHD children is important to keeping structure in your child's life."
Separation anxiety is not uncommon in ADHD children, particularly if they've never been away from home before. Expect this and be prepared to reassure you child. An appropriately structured summer camp can result in increased emotional and behavioral maturity.

Simple Routines

ADHD symptoms are appearing in younger and younger aged children. It is estimated that between one and four percent of preschoolers may have ADHD. Since ADHD medication hasn't been formally approved for very young children, most parents turn to various forms of behavior therapy.
"New research suggests simple techniques that give more structure to a preschooler's day can offer a nondrug alternative to help the tiniest sufferers of ADHD."
Some tips include finding very structured preschools, praising good behavior, and using "transitional systems" like a timer or bell to help children prepare for activity transitions.
